Alien: Romulus (Alvarez 2024)

Marshall Smith, PhD, and Laura Patterson, PhD, offer a sociological discussion of the 2024 film Alien: Romulus, directed by F. Alvarez and co-written by F. Alvarez and R. Sayagues.

Any horror or sci-fi fan knows that the Alien-verse has had an uneven history. From Scott’s Alien (1979) and Cameron’s Aliens (1986) that have stood the test of time to Scott’s Prometheus and Covenant that are … fine? Anyhow, Romulus fall somewhere on the high side of the middle. It doesn’t reach the heights of the first two, but it is far more entertaining and sensical than some of the other entries. And more importantly for us, it has solid messaging and representation including being anti-corporate and having diversity of representation.
